On East 102nd Street
In July of 2013, as part of a shoot for the documentary film “In Search of Bengali Harlem”, we reunited childhood friends Habib Ullah, Jr., Noor Chowdry, and Laily Chowdry, and Habib’s wife Felita, and among other things, went to visit the block on East 102nd Street where Habib grew up in the 1940s-60s, which was also just a few blocks away from where Felita had grown up in the same period. Renowned East Harlem photographer Hiram Maristany loaned us a stack of his photos and as Habib, Felita, Laily, and Noor looked through them, Felita narrated.
